Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday announced that the United States and Iran have signed the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU),” a diplomatic agreement aimed at reducing tensions and advancing peaceful dialogue between the two countries.
In a statement shared on social media, the prime minister said the memorandum was electronically signed by the leaders of both nations and formally endorsed by Pakistan, which facilitated the negotiations as a mediator.
According to Shehbaz Sharif, the agreement reflects a mutual commitment by Washington and Tehran to address their differences through diplomacy and constructive engagement rather than confrontation.
The prime minister stated that the Islamabad MoU would take effect immediately. Under the initial phase of the agreement, Iran is expected to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States will remove maritime restrictions that have affected Iranian ports and shipping activities.
Shehbaz congratulated US President Donald Trump for supporting diplomatic efforts and helping create conditions for a negotiated settlement. He also acknowledged the role played by members of the American negotiating team, including Vice President J.D. Vance, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner.
The prime minister further praised Iran’s leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian, for what he described as their willingness to pursue peace and regional stability. He also recognized the contributions of senior Iranian officials involved in the talks.
In addition, Shehbaz thanked the leadership of Qatar for its support in facilitating discussions and commended Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Egypt for their constructive involvement throughout the diplomatic process.
Highlighting Pakistan’s role in the negotiations, the prime minister paid tribute to Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, saying his efforts were instrumental in advancing dialogue and helping achieve a breakthrough between the two sides.
The prime minister expressed hope that the Islamabad MoU would pave the way for lasting peace, greater regional cooperation, and stronger diplomatic relations. He described the agreement as an important step toward reducing tensions and promoting stability across the wider Middle East.
Observers say the success of the agreement will depend on its implementation in the coming weeks, as both sides move forward with confidence-building measures and further negotiations on outstanding issues.
