Shaheen Afridi Defends Spin-Friendly Pitches After Pakistan’s ODI Series Win Over Australia

LAHORE: Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi has defended the team’s decision to prepare spin-friendly pitches during the ODI series against Australia, saying every team has the right to use home conditions to its advantage. Pakistan secured a 2-1 series victory after winning the final ODI at Gaddafi Stadium in a low-scoring contest. The series, played in Rawalpindi and Lahore, featured turning pitches that heavily favored spin bowlers. The nature of the surfaces sparked debate among fans and analysts, with some questioning whether such conditions would help Pakistan prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be played in southern Africa. Responding to the criticism, Afridi said teams around the world tailor conditions to maximize their chances of winning at home. “There is still plenty of time before the World Cup,” Afridi said. “Every team prepares pitches that suit their strengths. When we toured Australia, we played on fast and bouncy wickets. At home, our focus is to make the most of our own conditions.” He added that Pakistan will have opportunities to prepare for different conditions through upcoming international tours and series. One of the standout performers of the series was young spinner Arafat Minhas, who impressed on his ODI debut with a five-wicket haul and was later named Player of the Series for his all-round performances. Afridi also praised spinner Abrar Ahmed and backed vice-captain Shadab Khan, whose return to the ODI side had attracted attention. While Shadab struggled with the ball in the opening matches, he made valuable contributions with the bat, including a crucial half-century in the second ODI and an unbeaten innings in the series decider. “The biggest positive for us was Shadab Khan,” Afridi said. “Experienced players are often the ones who help win close matches under pressure. He contributed with both bat and ball when the team needed him.” Pakistan are now set for a break before beginning their upcoming Test assignments against the West Indies and England later this year.
