Karachi Police Detain Man Over Alleged Honour-Based Killing of Newlywed Pair

KARACHI: Law enforcement authorities have taken a man into custody in connection with the fatal shooting of a recently married couple in Karachi’s Malir Saudabad area, officials confirmed on Tuesday. According to police, the suspect was arrested during an operation carried out within the jurisdiction of Sachal Police Station. Investigators are still searching for another individual believed to have participated in the attack. The shooting occurred when the couple was travelling with relatives from Karachi to Hyderabad after completing legal marriage formalities. Family sources said the pair had planned to hold their wedding celebrations after Eid. Police reports indicate that armed assailants intercepted the vehicle and opened fire. Security camera footage reportedly captured the incident, showing attackers on motorcycles targeting the car before fleeing the scene. The bride and groom sustained fatal injuries and died during the attack. Authorities later registered a case under multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, including murder and criminal conspiracy provisions. During questioning, the arrested man allegedly admitted his role in the crime. Investigators claim he told police that his sister had previously been promised in marriage to another individual in exchange for a payment of Rs350,000. However, she later chose to marry a different man against the wishes of those involved in the arrangement. Police said the suspect claimed that the former fiancĂ© demanded the return of the money and allegedly pressured him over the matter. He further identified his alleged accomplice as the brother of the woman’s former suitor. According to investigators, the suspect stated that family and financial pressures contributed to the deadly attack on the couple. Police are continuing their investigation and conducting raids to apprehend the remaining suspect. Officials said further arrests may be made as the inquiry progresses.
